An armed man was arrested at a golf course in California after scoping out security days before a President Trump was set to visit the Golden State, according to the Department of Justice (DOJ).

First Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California Bilal Essayli said 38-year-old Jeanine John Taele was arrested Sunday at Trump National Golf Club Los Angeles in Ranchos Palos Verdes, Calif. He is facing several charges of possession of an unregistered short-barreled rifle, according to the statement.

Essayli added that Taele was spotted “taking photos and video of security-planning activities” ahead of the president’s trip to the West Coast to sell his economic messaging.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department also discovered that Taele had ammunition on him and found “a loaded pistol with a round chambered and a loaded magazine” in his vehicle.

Taele pleaded not guilty Tuesday to four charges: three weapons charges filed after his arrest and another robbery charge tied to a November 2025 incident, according to the authorities.

The investigation is ongoing and authorities have not determined whether Taele posed a threat to the president.

The arrest comes amid heightened political tension and in the wake of multiple assassination attempts against Trump.

In 2024, a bullet grazed the president’s ear during a summer campaign rally in Pennsylvania and months later, a man was detained after poking the tip of his rifle through the hedges at Trump’s golf course in West Palm Beach, Fla. Most recently, a gunman tried to target him during the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner in April.

On Tuesday, Trump attended fundraising events hosted by the Republican National Committee at his golf club in Los Angeles.

He will be in Las Vegas on Wednesday to promote his agenda, including tax cuts under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, ahead of November’s midterms.
