Bouchard, Hines to clash for open James seat in competitive Michigan House race

Former prosecutor Christina Hines is projected to win the Democratic nomination for Michigan’s 10th Congressional District, according to Decision Desk HQ, setting up a closely-watched battle against GOP nominee Mike Bouchard in November.

Incumbent Rep. John James’s (R-Mich.) decision to run for governor has left the Macomb County district without an incumbent for the first time since it was redistricted in 2022, making it a key battleground for both Democrats and Republicans in the Wolverine state.

In the three-way Democratic contest between Hines, former Commerce Department official Eric Chung and former state House Minority Leader Tim Greimel, Hines was considered a clear favorite over the rest of the candidates.

While Hines had raised the least amount of money in the field, she still held a 23-point lead over the fundraising juggernaut Chung ahead of the primary, according to a poll commissioned by EMILY’s List, which backed Hines.

The former special victims prosecutor also had the most local support, securing endorsements from elected officials in Macomb County and from Carl Marlinga, the Democratic nominee in 2022 and 2024.

Hines is set to face off against Bouchard, an Army veteran who is the son of Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard. He secured the Republican nomination after receiving endorsements from President Trump and House Republican leadership in June.

The district, which represents Macomb County and a small part of Oakland County, has slightly favored Republicans in recent years. Trump won the district in 2020 by 1 percentage point, and won it again in 2024 by 7 points. The Cook Political Report rated the race as “lean Republican,” adding that it remains highly competitive.

Michigan is home to several closely watched House races this year, including the battleground 7th District represented by Rep. Tom Barrett (R) and the competitive 4th District represented by Rep. Bill Huizenga (R), which Democrats are targeting.
