Live results: Virginia voters set up matchups for vulnerable House seats

Virginians head to the polls Tuesday to cast their ballots to choose nominees for House races in the Old Dominion State.

Virginia Democrats attempted to redraw the state’s congressional districts following their success in taking back the governor’s mansion last November. Virginia voters backed the plan in an April referendum. However, the state’s Supreme Court threw out that result in a ruling the following month, leaving the current map in place.

All of this upheaval is responsible for the primaries being pushed back from mid-June to Tuesday, Aug. 4.

Two of Democrats’ top targets this cycle are seats held by Virginia Republicans, the Rep. Rob Wittman (R-Va.) in the 1st District and Jen Kiggans (R-Va.) in the 2nd District, with races Tuesday determining who will faces those incumbents.

In the 1st District primary, Henrico County Commonwealth’s Attorney Shannon Taylor faces off against a crowded field that includes veterans Elizabeth Dempsey Beggs and Jason Knapp, attorneys Salaam Bhatti, Ericka Kopp and Mel Tull and political organizer Tim Cywinski.

In the 2nd District primary, former Rep. Elaine Luria (D-Va.) seeks to retake her old seat from Kiggans but must first fend off a field of challengers that includes former USAID worker Patrick Mosolf, physician Nila Devanath and conservationist Bill Fleming.

In the 7th District, a trio of Republican —entrepreneur Philip Harding, Army veteran and consultant Doug Ollivant and pastor Ricky Smithers—face off on Tuesday for the right to take on first-term Rep. Eugene Vindman (D-Va.)
