Michigan’s Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers claimed he is ahead by almost seven percent on early-returned ballots, contrary to recent polls which lean in favor of his Democratic opponent Abdul El-Sayed.

“We’re actually about seven percent ahead on voters that we believe are voting for us returning their ballots,” Rogers said during an appearance on Fox News. Before mentioning the numbers, Rogers said they are “by our models.”

Rogers did not provide any further evidence backing up his claim, which is out of step with recent polling on the race.

A recent poll from CNN on Thursday found 49 percent of respondents backed or leaned toward El-Sayed, while 42 percent toward Rogers. Nonpartisan election forecaster Decision Desk HQ leans heavily in favor of El-Sayed, giving him a 74 percent chance of winning the Senate race.

El-Sayed has made headlines in the closing weekend of the campaign for a public spat with his former Democratic primary rival Rep. Haley Stevens (D-Mich.). He asked her to stay away from his campaign events and disinvited her from a planned appearance on Sunday after a disagreement between the two stemming from a political ad supporting El-Sayed’s campaign that appeared to blame Israel and Jews for rising costs of living.

During his appearance on Fox, Rogers mentioned the spat involving Stevens’ fiancé, Jason Turkish, who said he would not support El-Sayed in the upcoming elections and accused the Democrat of using antisemitic language on the campaign trail. Following that Stevens noted that she is still backing El-Sayed saying “like a lot of households in America, we’re a household divided.”

Rogers has sought to capitalize on El-Sayed’s perceived struggles courting Jewish voters with the race expected to be close

“We have a massive number of Jewish Democrats who are openly … organizing to vote for us,” Rogers told Fox News.
