Pennsylvania governor declares LeBron James Day as 76ers set to sign NBA star

LeBron James is reportedly set to finish his storied career as a Philadelphia 76er, and Pennsylvania’s governor celebrated the news with an official proclamation.

“By the power vested in the me as the Governor of the great Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and a die-hard Sixers fan… I hereby proclaim today to be LEBRON JAMES DAY,” Gov. Josh Shapiro (D) wrote in a social media post Friday.

The proclamation laid out James’s accomplishments in the league, including his four NBA titles and 22 times appearing in the league’s All Star Game. James began his career in Cleveland, before winning titles with the Miami Heat and Los Angeles Lakers.

Shapiro’s post came just hours after ESPN reported James was set to sign a two-year, $8 million deal with the 76ers beginning this season.

James, 41, in a string of posts on social platform X talked about his most recent stint in free agency, saying “the last few weeks have really been special.”

“I’ve never been able to have no clue what to do and take real time to just think. I’ve had an incredible few months with all the people I love trying to figure it all out,” James wrote. “This is my last decision. I’m not going for money. I’m not going for family. What am I really playing for at this point? I still want to sacrifice. I still want to work. I still want to grind. I still want to compete, to win and to have a chance at the feeling of winning another championship.”

James will join Philadelphia stars Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey in the “City of Brotherly Love,” which has not won an NBA title since 1983.
