Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) unveiled legislation Monday that would bar social media companies from selling expedited access to posts from government officials following the launch of Truth API.
President Trump’s media company launched the service over the weekend, which gives Wall Street firms advance access to Truth Social’s “most market-moving” posts.
Warner’s bill, called the No Preferential Release of Federal Information for Transactions (NO PROFIT) Act, would ban social media firms from selling prioritized access to accounts associated with the president, vice president, members of Congress and other government employees.
It would also make it illegal to trade on “material information” obtained through such a service.
“The president’s company selling prioritized access to the president’s market-moving posts is corrupt and erodes public confidence,” Warner said in a statement. “Americans should have free and equal access to public statements made by U.S. government officials.”
“Early access to government information should not be sold to whoever will pay the price,” he added.
Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG) announced its plans to launch Truth API in mid-July. Application programming interfaces (APIs), which allow software applications to communicate and share data with each other, can be used by investors in algorithmic trading programs.
Truth Social remains Trump’s chief means of communication with the public. His posts, which feature everything from announcements of major military operations and policy decisions to AI-generated images, frequently shift markets.
“Markets already move on Truth Social posts,” TMTG interim CEO Kevin McGurn said in a statement at the time. “Truth API delivers a direct, licensed, real-time feed of the platform’s most market-moving Truths while advancing our strategy to monetize proprietary assets through a high-margin, recurring revenue stream.”
